I finally relaxed following the final event on my Christmas social calendar. Several days ago was the last of a myriad of activities, one for every group to which I belong. Yes, if you’re in a Christ-based group, it’s usually required to celebrate His birthday. Several days ago, I attended two parties, scheduled at the same exact time on opposite sides of town. Since I’m devoted to both, I had to do double duty.
I had slid out of my condo driveway onto new fallen snow to head to the roller coaster south hill. Loaded in my car were a gelatin salad for the potluck and gifts for the white elephant exchange for the first event. I also brought along 26 chocolate ornaments for the employees of the charity where I volunteer to serve at the second party.
I was determined not to miss out on either event, but it felt like a whirlwind tour of some country, where I left midway from one site to another. Most of this season has been like this for me. December had barely begun when the Bible study leaders carried out their annual Christmas get-together. After the usual gift exchange, each member brought their collected contributions for blessing bags for the homeless with soaps, razors, water, gloves, caps, etc..
The next day, my co-workers gathered, donning ugly Christmas sweaters to eat goodies and sing carols. This was followed by a heart-warming message.
Several days later, our church held their chaotic, and crazy Christmas sing. All three services crammed into the sanctuary for carol singing. We were encouraged to wear creative costumes and play large group games. I persuaded my grandsons to attend as my late birthday present, which turned out to be a lot more fun than they’d expected.
Much more on the quiet side a few days after that, a dear friend and I exchanged gifts after she’d served us lunch. Days later, my small group of elderly friends met at a nursing home to share gifts, tea and treats. This was followed by a meeting with my neighbors at our game day in the condo club house, which became my opportunity to share candy and cookie bags with cards. Both groups’ faces lit up by these gestures, so it was worth the effort in the kitchen.
So, introvert that I am, now that I’ve made it through this busy season and have completed my gift wrapping and cards, I’m feeling a little less frenzied. I’ve also been able to clean, decorate, and plan my Christmas Eve meal. My son and grandsons have agreed to attend Christmas Eve services with me, the highlight of my celebration. I think I’m ready for the actual event when family will celebrate together. I’m working Christmas day, but then I can truly see an end to this year’s Christmas season.
As I take the time to recognize Christ’s title of Immanuel (God with us), I can glory in the true meaning of our celebrations. There is peace on earth at the Lord’s coming, once the frenzies are over.
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL!
