I can’t help but notice the similarities of the Corona Virus events compared to the Israelites’ escape from Egyptian slavery. For instance, consider how alike our current situation is with all the major pursuits of our lives shutting down, which resembles the impact of the ten plagues. God closed out the Egyptian’s lifestyle to get their attention.
Likewise, in our current state, the virus has stopped almost all sports, a major focus for many of our citizens. As well, the whole entertainment industry has been put on hold. Multi-million-dollar movies have put off their premieres, theme parks have closed, award-shows postponed, etcetera. Many have lost their jobs and the economy has slowed to a frightening level of inactivity. Instead of patting ourselves on the back for our flourishing financial status, our leaders juggle funds to save our nation’s workers and business owners.
Folks are being forced to hunker down with their families and refocus on staying well and safe. They’re doing online schooling and worshiping, working from home and, in many cases, becoming reacquainted with each other.
I’ve heard that for my area, the peak of Corona is coming soon–the greatest amount of new cases and number of deaths. So, as we await this new “Passover,” we need to gather our families into the shelter of our homes and stay put till it’s over. This is like what the God-fearing Israelites were instructed to do long ago during the original Passover.
What is the comparison here? The same blood-covering is the answer for both events. It’s not that our staying home will protect us without fail, but the blood of Christ covers every Christian for eternal life, regardless of the virus or anything else.
So, as Passover celebration comes about, consider the reason for our celebration of God’s covering, both then and now.
