It was a typical weekend. Me, rushing around, trying to get to work by 8:00AM. The clock showed that my departure should commence, and I still had to water plants, brush my teeth and apply lipstick. With the smoky atmosphere from nearby wildfires added to the heat, I dared not skip the care of my balcony plants. Nor did my appearance at work make it wise to forget my grooming needs.
I soon flew out the door, locked it, and headed for the elevator down to my car. Yikes, 15 minutes left to make a 20-minute destination!
I focused on any tricks to streamline my journey to trim off those five extra minutes. Thank you, Lord, the lights were in my favor: green, green, slightly yellow €¦ Whew!
Just as I entered the neighborhood surrounding my employment, I noticed changes. Orange, diamond-shaped signs popped out at me stating “Road Closed Ahead.” What! Since last weekend, the summer construction phenomena had arrived in my routine way to work. Being a big-time creature of habit, I found this extremely upsetting. I wasn’t used to going a different way, so resented the changes this brought. Besides which, it would make me even later! After dodging several large construction vehicles and other encumbrances, I admitted defeat and turned into an unknown street to seek a new path to work. Finally, I saw the familiar sight, if not from the regular angle.
My day went better from that point on, so eight hours later, I left work taking the reverse route of my earlier new direction. I looked down to see a gas pump symbol blinking at me, so knew I’d have to make a stop on the way home. I had plenty of time to go to Costco so I headed out.
As I neared this well-known site, I sensed a rare experience. I found the usually packed-full parking lot to be totally empty. The normally full gas station was not even there. Where was it? What’s going on? Is this a nightmare?
Oh! My face turned pink as I started laughing. It had suddenly occurred to me. This is no longer Costco! Like a horse automatically heading for the barn, I had gone on auto pilot to the place I usually spent every other Friday after pay day. I shook my head in disbelief to think that despite several earlier visits to the new Costco, I’d forgotten.
In addition to that, it seemed amazing that twice in one day, I had become lost. Each time, it had been a resistance to change. Was Somebody trying to tell me something?
