Artificial lighting is a constant presence on my busy street throughout the night. That’s why several years ago following a fierce windstorm, the anomaly of total darkness was so shocking. My own home maintained electricity but the neighborhood below us was in utter darkness.
I felt guilt as I drove through this area, for the folks trying to make it through this time without the assistance of lights, despite a few flashlights and lanterns. Light to see to move about safely, stoves to fix meals, heaters to keep warm, or computers and TV’s to entertain themselves. Our lights shone even more brightly in contrast to the blackened area nearby.
Isn’t this how it should be in our spiritual realm? We who have the enlightenment of Christ and His good news should let our light shine brightly. Our lives should be enticing for those cold, hungry souls bumping around in the outer darkness. We can invite them into our loving warmth and enlightened view of God’s generous plan of salvation. Sharing can’t help but show the contrast to their paths of lost wanderings. The Word of God gives us the map or guidebook for the path of life into His kingdom.
Attitudes of hope and trust must be attractive to those slogging through depths of despair, like a friendly candle in the window seen by a traveler searching in the dark for a place of safety. Let your light shine and bring it everywhere you go as you walk into this dark world!
