Memorable Senior Moments

of Dianna L. Brumfield

Lists Lead to Legacy

During my self-imposed isolation period following the discovery of a light case of Shingles, I decided to explore household projects to maintain my sanity. I came up with a list of thirty-one activities to keep myself occupied.

First on the list opened-up an occasion to expand my usual hour-long daily Bible reading and prayer time. I didn’t need to rush through my devotions, including “Jesus Calling,” A Moody Today in the Word, a prayer and Bible journal from church, and a women’s Bible study. Prayer time would include intercession for family, friends, and groups, and best, just a cozy, grateful conversation with my Lord.

Then, I roused myself to take on cleaning jobs, such as closets and kitchen cabinets. Organizational projects included old Christmas cards, 150-some blogs, and pictures.

Through this process, I encountered items I’d totally forgotten which were delightful to find. As well, I uncovered things I could share, donate, or dispose of to make more room in my small condo.

The blogs helped me recall a wealth of my personal history, both pleasant and disagreeable. The overall impression I received from this trip back in time was tremendous gratitude for God’s guidance. His presence prevailed during a cancer battle, a house fire, marriage and family challenges, job situations, plus my mom’s and husband’s passing. The Lord kept me going throughout it all by appropriating his Word for encouragement along with friends’ support. And I lived to tell about it!

Now I am inspired to start a new project. My week of isolation is complete, but I want to continue to put together my history via scattered blogs and handwritten notes I found to compile in a binder. Perhaps someday, a great granddaughter will have curiosity about the family matriarch she never met. At least it will be there, in case someone needs to learn the lessons from life the Lord taught me, as He faithfully walked by my side. Who would guess that lists made to entertain me through Shingles would lead to lasting legacy?
