Memorable Senior Moments

of Dianna L. Brumfield

My Favorite Sanctuary

Since becoming a widow, my time alone has been my new reality. Because of my faith, it isn’t a big problem. In fact, I find it a definite advantage, especially when I want some time in God’s presence.

Since my love language is being heard, I do an inordinate amount of gabbing with Him. There are times when I focus on my daily God word, which is another name for my chosen of His attributes to guide my morning prayer time. On days where my schedule is less crowded, I enjoy just taking my time to travel through the A.C.T.S. prayer formula (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, and Supplication) in a leisurely manner. Those times are precious and infuse me with joy, peace, and energy.

My favorite location for these occasions is in my bedroom corner by the window, sitting in my lazy boy chair, which I have dubbed my prayer chair. It was a gift from a friend whose in-law’s mother had used prior to her passing. Although somewhat old, it’s a small feminine size, which fits my body as well as my needs. I cuddle up there each morning, absorbing God’s company as I discuss with him my current blessings and/or problems. Starting with Adoration via the God word takes me into a bit of research on my phone, looking at Bible verses, definitions, and articles on the topic, to give me ammo for what to pray. I guess you could identify it as meditation.

By the time I get to supplication, I am fully armed with greater appreciation for my sovereign and loving Lord. So, no matter what issues are taking place in my current life, I am filled with preparation to meet the day.

Special seasons of concern see the prayer chair occupied more frequently, as I seek out more guidance and direction from my Good Shepherd. Naturally, I can slip in arrow prayers as well in various locations, even during my travels. It can occur as a visual cue from nearby scenery or as I’m passing a stranger on the street who looks like they need prayer.

In this time of worldly upheaval and war, we all need a place of sanctuary. May you too find a prayer chair or a place of some sort where you can seek the sanctuary of God’s presence.
