Welcome to an imaginary summer tale:
Peaceful as a meandering river on a summer day,
I create a wake as I extend my big toe
Face down, drifting slowly on my tube.
The sun beats down on my baking back
With welcome warmth that drugs me.
Turning over, I watch puffy clouds
Floating up in that bigger expanse of blue.
Closing my eyes against the blinding sun rays,
I focus on the sounds around me–
A quiet noisiness, a drone of insects
Set against a general stillness–
Sounds of earth delighting in the summer.
The land on the surrounding banks
With all its vegetation and animal life,
Exudes a musty odor of dirt and growth.
Suddenly, a brief hint of some wild flowers
Crinkles my nose in reaction to its pollen.
I stir to soak my face and neck with water,
Still cold from my iced canteen
And take a sip to relieve my desert throat.
I yank my cap farther down, hiding my red nose.
Soon enough I’ll return to my other life
Where schedules are kept and jobs are done.
No time there to spend a moment in nature
To appreciate the still, small voice of God.
He speaks to me in the quiet while I take a breath,
Peaceful as a meandering river on a summer day.
”Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted
among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.”
Psalms 46:10 ESV
