Memorable Senior Moments

of Dianna L. Brumfield

Prepper Vs. Hoarder

I’m sure you’ve heard of the notion of preparing for rumored food shortages and other apocalyptic events. If not, take it from me, they’re out there aplenty. As I’ve become accustomed to such rumblings from my U-Tube habit, I have grown concerned and influenced by this phenomenon.

Consequently, I felt it helpful to start a collection of food stuffs of all kinds. This included dry goods, such as flour, sugar, etcetera, as well as a multitude of canned items. Due to my vegetarian diet, my focus is on veggies and grains, primarily all sorts of beans and rice.

I was nearing the point of no return on storage space when I learned about a clever example of a neighbor who turned her coat closet into a pantry. Yes, this idea served me well as a means of storage.

In addition, I tried to think ahead in supplying future needs to care for cleaners, medical and beauty items. I even bought a ton of toilet paper and water bottles, stored in any cabinet or drawer not already in use.

After a time, I began to consider my inspiration for all this gathering process. Was I being truly wise, or was I simply hoarding, with no trust in the Lord’s provisions? I prayed about it, asking God to assist in my contemplations. The answer I heard was to check my motivation. Was I simply taking care of numero uno, or thinking of ways I could serve the Lord and others? What if there were a food shortage and my fellow-condo dwellers were stuck without resources? Certainly, I would be happy to provide. Or I would gladly share with friends or family if they found themselves without.

Besides all my magnanimous ideas, it was an excellent way to be practical. If food and other prices continue to climb, the price I pay today will be ever so much lower than the future cost. Prepping is not such a bad idea if one’s motives are pure.

I’m also amidst the production of fresh veggies via a tote garden. I’m learning how to dry the products of my gardening efforts. I have purchased a small freezer to use for storage and plan to otherwise use my dehydrator. At night, I scan the internet for directions on these methods and have become introduced to the skill of fermentation.

So, if you decide to visit me sometime soon, don’t be surprised if you find a plethora of supplies stuck here and there, ready to be used when needed. Don’t forget, if you’re low on food, you know where to come.
