Memorable Senior Moments

Streamlining II

Books  After I learned to enjoy the process of downsizing and the freedom of streamlining, I discovered another of its benefits. Not only did it permit me to own my things without allowing them to own me, but it gave me a chance to share.
I had collected all kinds of Bibles for years. With each new version received, I proudly noted having almost every available Bible.
Following the earlier elimination of a great majority of my books, I noticed the Bibles still maintained their spot of honor on my book shelf. It occurred to me that my IPhone App allowed for the same variety of translations, so my scripture collection was unnecessary. I cannot tell a lie–most of them were dusty from neglect. My conscience further tweaked considering how welcome this Bible library would be at work. The residents there at the women’s home could use them, plus other study guides for the Word.
On my next shift, I brought in a box-full of the treasured Bibles and study aids. The reaction to their presence surprised me as one after another of the ladies studied them. Their excitement didn’t hold a candle, though, to the joy expressed by the resident Librarian. She could hardly wait to place them in the small study room upstairs.
That same week, I had another message from my conscience as I passed by a small pile of books in my bedroom. My years working as a volunteer trainer at a different ministry had provided me with gifts of devotionals. My plan had been to re-gift them when the occasion arose. However, here was another opportunity to share with women who were just learning to use the scriptures on a daily basis.
Later another stack of books nearby caught my eye. It contained journals given to me, since I like to write. The funny thing is, I don’t especially like to journal, so most of them were as blank as when received. It made an excellent donation for the residents who were learning to write down their discoveries during counseling and classes.
Let’s just say, I became the Librarian’s favorite person as I delivered these additions to her. At the same time, our home became freer of possessions and my heart lightened with the joy of giving.
Streamlining is an excellent means of ridding yourself of excess possessions which can be a source of delight to others. It can even provide spiritual growth in the area of sharing and blessing others with God-centered materials.
