Have a helping of summer memories from my childhood in Kansas–
Summer nights in Kansas as a child will always stand out in my memory as a time of peace and contentment. When “supper” dishes were done, the family gathered on the front porch. My grandmother slowly swung in the creaking swing, sipping lemonade. She spoke with passing neighbors out for their nightly stroll. My Aunt Nicky played with her plump cat, Pitty Pat, while my mother seemed lost in thought, staring at the brightening stars.
The crickets’ nightly chorus droned on as I felt a light breeze against my face, that provided relief after that day’s scorcher. LeAnn, my neighbor friend appeared and we began to run around catching fireflies to put in a bottle. It fascinated us to watch their glowing bodies, shining out in the darkening nearness. As we approached the side yard where the mulberry tree stood, we caught a snatch of that sweet aroma only mulberries produce, reminding us of pies and jams.
After LeAnn went home, I joined the others for a slice of watermelon melting on my tongue in refreshing sweetness. Goosebumps on my bare arms grew as a cool breeze passed through.
Nobody had any urgency to go in to complete a task, or be somewhere else. I sat back on the porch step, staring at the night sky aware of the buzz of adult conversation in the background. My heart rested in pleasant peace. Would I always feel this safe? All of us were dreamily content to spend a summer night together in Kansas.
